The Wilderness Society believes in your right to privacy. To protect that right, we follow these practices.
E-Mail Addresses
We collect email addresses of subscribers to WildAlert and other online news services so that we can send email news briefings. We use these email addresses only to distribute our electronic news updates. The Wilderness Society never sells, rents, or lends e-mail addresses of users to anyone.
Registered subscribers can remove their names from our subscriber list at any time by following instructions included at the bottom of each email message.
E-mail addresses that we collect through forms on the site are used to provide that service and occasionally to announce new material on our website that may be of interest to our readers. We do not share these email addresses with anyone.
Postal Mailing Lists
The Wilderness Society sometimes rents its postal mailing list (but never e-mail addresses) to organizations that wish to offer products and services to its subscribers. Please contact us if you wish to opt-out of these mailings.
Advertising
The Wilderness Society does not use third-party advertising on its website. However, we do promote our corporate partners by including links to their websites and information about them on our website. The Wilderness Society is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of these sites.
Cookies
A "cookie" is a small file assigning you a unique ID that is placed on your computer by a web server. The Wilderness Society's web site uses cookies within our action center in order to identify the action taker and make it easier to take action. We may also from time to time use cookies on the homepage so that frequent visitors are not presented a pop-up window each time they come to wilderness.org. When leaving our site to visit an advertiser's site or another site to which we are linked, you may encounter cookies.
Security of Financial information
The Wilderness Society collects financial information (usually credit-card numbers) only to bill for membership, merchandise or other products or services selected by you. This site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control. At wilderness.org your personal information and credit card number are encrypted by SSL (Secure Socket Layers), and your information is stored in an encrypted database.
One easy method to verify SSL security is to check the bottom left corner of your browser. Whenever you enter a secure area-like The Wilderness Society Online Membership form-the broken key (or padlock) icon is replaced by a solid, secure key (or padlock). Whenever you see this icon, your personal information will be safely and securely transmitted over the web.
Children
Sections of our site including our Earth Day site have been designed for a younger audience and are in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule.
Links to Other Sites
As a service to our visitors, we provide links to many other web sites. A link does not denote an endorsement of those web sites. In addition, The Wilderness Society is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites.
Your Choice to Opt-Out
The Wilderness Society provides users the opportunity to opt-out of receiving communications from us at the point where we request information about you. If you do not wish to receive such communications, please select one of the options below. Be sure to include your TWS membership number or your name and address at they appear on your mailing label. That will help us to expedite your request.
