As my 11-year-old son, Tom, stepped onto the summit I asked him to stop for a picture. He planted his feet wide, put his hands on his hips and gave a smile that said, "I'm the king of the world!" With the North Cascades spread out before us, he looked every bit the part.

For me, winter time in the North Cascades always stirs up memories of my boyhood days spent along the Skagit River, Gorge Dam and Gorge Lake?a wonderland for any boy. My family moved to Diablo when I was eight-months old, and my adventures began.
By: Cynthia Wilkerson, WA Program Manager, The Wilderness Society I feel incredibly fortunate to call the North Cascades home. The landscape of the North Cascades called to me to return to the Northwest after being gone for several years.

Thirty-five years ago, at the age of 19, I was a backpacker northbound on the Pacific Crest Trail. In late August of 1973, atop Slate Peak, I finally reached the edge of the great and mysterious Pasayten Wilderness.

Though I live in Wenatchee with my six-year-old son, I?m a transplant from a sprawling metropolitan where acres of concrete far outnumbered the acres of green spaces. And because we live in Wenatchee, my son and I are fortunate enough to venture to the North Cascades on a somewhat regular basis.

Hayden, my nine-year-old son, came to look over my shoulder. After contemplating the heading on the page, ?My North Cascades Story,? he said, ?Dad, can I tell my story??
Here it is: ?We get out of the car, clear blue sky and we are surrounded by snowy mountains. We?re excited because dad is taking us for our first backpacking trip. Mom and dad help us on with our packs.

I wake up everyday with a sense of joy and excitement. I know that soon I?ll be experiencing first hand the exceptional beauty and wonder of the North Cascades. I?m never quite sure what the day?s adventure will be but I am sure that it will be up-lifting. Summer could find me hiking a high mountain trail, biking along a free flowing river or paddling around a scenic and peaceful lake. Winter could be skating on perfectly groomed trails or making turns in an alpine bowl.
