I’m a fan of Dan and Dean. No, I don’t mean the surf music duo from the 60’s, Jan and Dean. I mean Dan and Dean, you know, Dan the calf and Dean the cattle puppy. I became fans of theirs while producing the North Cascades: People, Places and Stories documentary for KCTS 9, which airs January 17th at 10:30 p.m. More on Dan and Dean in a moment.
While shooting the documentary over a 9-day period in October 2009, two moments stood out.
High Buck Hunt in the North Cascades By Anthony Novack, hunter & wildlife biologist For my fortieth birthday, I joined a friend for a journey into the high country during the first season available to hunt deer with a rifle. The High Buck Hunt occurs during the beginning of Autumn and is restricted to inside the limits of wilderness areas within the North Cascades.

My love of the mountains was kindled at an early age by my father, who took the time to introduce me to the North Cascades.
Over the years, we went backpacking, took horse trips and day hikes throughout the region. I learned so much by the examples he set, from how to pace yourself for a long-distance hike to figuring out the best place for a camp site. His mantra has always been "slow and steady wins the race."
By Shelbi Day, Whitewater Rafting Enthusiast For years, whitewater rafting has been one of my favorite hobbies. During a recent trip to visit friends in Seattle, I had the opportunity to raft the Wenatchee River ? a beautiful river in the North Cascades. The rafting trip started as a casual suggestion by my friend the day before I arrived in Seattle.
By Patty Murray, United States Senator It is hard to believe that on May 8th we will be celebrating the one year anniversary of the Wild Sky Wilderness, being signed into law. I think this is a great time to reflect on the hard work, tenacity, and dedication it required to get from the proposal being a dream of local activists to the first new wilderness in Washington state in over 20 years.

As the sun began to peak above the horizon we emerged from our tent to greet the new day and the river that flowed past our camp. My 4-year-old son, Aki, joined me as I pulled my fly rod from its case and made a few quick roll casts where the Pratt River joins the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie.
